Avant que Twilight Force ne monte sur scène à Paris le 16.10.16 à la Machine du Moulin Rouge, Alexandre (un fan du groupe qui les suit depuis leurs tous débuts) a pu s’entretenir avec Chrileon, le chanteur.

Que peux-tu nous dire à propos des membres du groupe ? Quels sont vos autres boulots à côté et quels sacrifices avez-vous consentis pour partir en tournée (avec Sonata et avec Sabaton)

Me concernant je travaille dans l’industrie audio visuelle : dessins animés, doublages, films. Je suis un technicien mais aussi une voix et un directeur. C’est très fun. Je dois chanter tout un tas de chansons et faire les adaptations dans les dessins animés. Il y a aussi les dialogues. Il est important de bien les prononcer, d’avoir une bonne diction. Ça c’est mon boulot. Dans le groupe nous avons aussi un musicien d’église, un organiste (joueur d’orgue ndlr)

 

Tu parles de Blackwald ? (le claviériste du groupe ndlr)

Non, Lynd (guitariste ndlr). Blackwald est professeur de musique. Il enseigne aussi dans l’ingénierie. Ça c’est l’histoire parallèle. Nous devons sacrifier beaucoup quand nous partons en tournée mais pour la plupart, nos employeurs sont très compréhensifs par rapport à ce qu’on fait.

 

Quelle est votre principale source d’inspiration ?

A la base, nous sommes une bande de geeks et nous adorons « Heroes of might and magic », tu connais ce jeu ?

Non

TU NE CONNAIS PAS CE JEU ? Tu devrais essayer, c’est l’un des meilleurs au monde

 

Je ne joue qu’aux FPS (first personnal shooters, tirs à la première personne ndlr) comme Battlefield ou Counterstrike, ce type de jeux.

Ha ok. C’est une grande inspiration pour nous, tout comme « Donjons et Dragons », « Skyrim ». Ce genre là.

 

Et quels sont les groupes qui vous ont influencés ?

Nous avons grandi avec Rhapsody (avant leur séparation ndlr), Blind Guardian et Helloween. Cette ère entre 1997/98 et 2001 environ. Ces groupes ont été des pionniers à cette période et bien évidemment nous avons été influencés par eux, mais nous avons aussi essayé de créer notre propre univers. C’est pourquoi nous avons construit un monde entier autour de Twillight Force, avec les personnages notamment. Tu as dû voir le coffret avec la carte ?

 

Non, je ne l’ai pas encore acheté car j’espère une édition qui contiendra le DVD en plus du CD. Est-ce prévu ?

Non pas encore.

D’accord, dans ce cas, il faut que j’achète le CD (rires),

Voilà (rires). Si tu regardes dans le coffret, il y a tout un monde : tous les personnages, d’où nous venons, où nous avons été réunis, ce genre-là.

 

J’ai hâte de voir ça. D’où vous est venue cette idée d’incarner des personnages ?

Principalement de Blackwanld et Lynd. Ils créent tout cet univers. Ce sont les deux têtes pensantes qui se sont réunis avec des idées de geek, dans le bon sens du terme (rires).

 

Et toi, est-ce que ça te plaît d’incarner un personnage ?

Oui, bien sûr ! À chaque fois que j’assiste à un concert, je veux un ensemble. Je veux écouter, je veux voir, mais je veux aussi sentir. Je pense que quand tu vas voir Twilight Force, tu entends (ce que je pense) être de la super musique mais tu peux aussi nous voir incarner des personnages, voilà ce que nous faisons. Tu peux lire nos histoires personnelles et bien plus encore. Tu peux aussi te sentir super heureux car on s’éclate sur scène. Nous aimons ce que nous faisons et nous aimons jouer ensemble. Et heureusement, on est capable de transférer cette joie au public. Quand tu quittes un concert de Twilight Force, tu peux penser que c’est une musique géniale, tu peux te sentir heureux et ça a été une expérience complète. Pour moi, il est donc très important de produire un ensemble.

 

Je suis d’accord, c’est vraiment une super expérience. Le concert au Sabaton Open Air a été fantastique. Tu t’es donné à 200%, c’était incroyable.

Il y a de gros changements  et des évolutions majeures (durée, orchestrations) entre le premier et le second album. Comment expliques-tu ces évolutions ?

Au départ, nous voulions créer un album de power metal basique. Un album dont nous pourrions être fiers. Prendre chaque élément et en tirer le maximum : chaque note, chaque « beat », tout ! Vraiment en tirer tout le potentiel. Et quand nous avons fini, on a réalisé que les gens adhéraient à ça, aimaient ça et nous, on était là : « …ok, cool ! »

 

Vous n’attendiez pas une telle réaction ?

Non, non, non. Pas du tout ! Au départ on l’a seulement fait pour nous. Mais maintenant nous avons un album dont nous pouvons être fiers. J’avais des amis qui travaillaient chez notre label précédent et je leur ai présenté le CD. (Il mime alors un dialogue). J’étais là : « voilà, ça c’est nous ». Et eux étaient là : « Ok ! On fait comme ça ! ». Et moi en retour : « Okay… C’est parti ! ». Je ne peux pas vraiment expliquer car tout a été si vite. Et puis on était sur le point d’enregistrer notre deuxième album et nous voulions simplement produire quelque chose de plus cinématographique, plus comme une expérience globale dont tu peux profiter avec un casque, et partir à l’aventure. C’est ça que tu ressens quand tu écoutes Twilight Force. Avec par example des chansons comme “And There Back Again” ou “Guardians Of The Seas”.

 

Ou encore “Riders Of The Dawn” !

Ouais ! Quand tu écoutes ça, tu vas ressentir que tu en fais partie, tu fermes tes yeux et tu y es ! C’est notre but principal.

 

Et qu’il y’a-t-il de prévu pour le troisième album ? Plus comme le deuxième ou plus comme le premier ? Est-ce déjà prévu ?

Oui c’est prévu actuellement. Mais seulement dans nos têtes.

 

Est-ce que cette commande provient du label ou de vous ?

Non, non, non, de nous ! Ils n’interfèrent en rien dans notre musique, et c’est très bien ainsi. Aujourd’hui, je ne sais pas où ça va nous mener (rires). Tu vas écouter du Twilight Force…

Peut-être un mixe de « Tales Of Ancient Prophecies » (leur premier album ndlr) et « Heroes » (leur second). On ne fera pas de la pop (rires). Rien de tout ça. On ne va pas se perdre en route. Vous entendrez bien du Twilight Force sur le troisième album.

 

Est-ce une référence à Sonata Arctica ? Car ils ont vraiment changé de style ces 15 dernières années.

Non, non, non, je pensais à Metallica. Pour Sonata, oui c’est un changement, mais je pense qu’ils ont muri en tant que groupe. Je le crois vraiment. Si tu observes depuis le premier album jusqu’à aujourd’hui, tu verras que c’est comme un enfant qui grandit. Et il n’y a rien de mal à être un enfant, rien de mal à être adolescent et rien de mal à être adulte. L’entièreté de leur carrière est remarquable. Je respecte vraiment ces gars-là, tout comme leur travail. Je pense qu’ils sont très bons. Je crois qu’ils ne méritent pas les critiques qu’ils ont eues. On doit observer ça dans son ensemble.

 

Peut-être que certains fans regrettent la première partie de leur carrière avec du vrai power metal, avec des chansons très rapides. Je ne les ai pas critiqué, mais la première partie de leur carrière me manque. Par exemple, ce soir j’espère entendre les chansons rapides mais je ne pense pas qu’ils vont les jouer. L’année dernière on aurait dit qu’ils avaient été obligés de jouer Ecliptica en entier pour drainer assez de monde. Bon, retournons à Twilight Force.

Comment s’est passée la collaboration avec Fabio Lione et Joakim Brodén (respectivement chanteurs de Rhapsody et Sabaton et invités à travailler sur le dernier album de TF)

Ça s’est très bien passé. Tous les deux sont de supers gars et Fabio est un grand professionnel. C’est un super gars, mais également un super chanteur. Tout a été très bien avec lui en tant qu’invité. Quant à Joakim… Nous sommes de vieux amis. Nous sommes de la même ville, nous avons grandi ensemble. C’est comme de l’inceste entre Sabaton et Twilight Force. Je chante avec eux, ils chantent avec nous. Blackwlad a commencé en tant que claviériste dans Sabaton. Dans les petites villes, c’est ce qui arrive.

 

Il y a deux ans j’ai connu Twilight Force en écoutant “Gates Of Glory” avec  Joakim. Je pense qu’ils vous ont beaucoup aidé.

Oui, oui, bien sûr ! Ça nous a beaucoup aidé. Mais s’ils n’avaient pas cru en nous, ils n’auraient absolument rien fait pour nous. Mais apparemment ils y croient, et nous allons partir ensemble en tournée.

 

En parlant d’invités, est-ce que tu as en tête des artistes avec lesquels tu voudrais travailler ?

Ce serait un rêve d’avoir Hansi Kürsch sur un de nos albums. Michael Kiske également. C’est l’une de mes plus grosses inspirations. Voyons ce qu’il va se passer, peut-être que nous aurons d’autres invités. Peut-être pas (rires).

 

Selon toi, quelles sont les forces et les limites du groupe à l’heure actuelle ? Commençons par les forces…

La chose la plus importante est que nous sommes vraiment de bons amis. Parce que nos tournées, nos sessions d’enregistrement, c’est prenant. C’est important de bien savoir avec qui tu travailles. Ça évite de craquer. Je pense que c’est notre plus grande force, de très bien se connaître. De plus nous faisons ça tous ensemble et nous prenons du plaisir à le faire, ça aussi c’est très important.

Quant aux limites… Je ne pense pas que nous en ayons (rires). Je ne dis pas que TWILIGHT FORCE EST LE MEILLEUR GROUPE AU MONDE (il dit ça avec une voix exagérément beauf et stupide). Non je ne dis pas ça. Je ne pense pas que nous en ayons, car nous nous éclatons en faisant ça et tant que ça durera, on continuera de le faire. Je ne pense à rien d’autre.

 

Je pense que ta voix et ton talent font partie des plus grandes forces du groupe. Quand quelqu’un écoute, il est obligé de se dire : “mais quelle voix”.

J’ai beaucoup écouté les deux albums et je me demande si vous n’avez pas peur d’être limité en terme de vocabulaire dans les prochains albums. Il y a beaucoup de mots qui reviennent déjà souvent (might, kingdom, twilight, mountains, dragon),

Laisse moi te retourner la question et ainsi te demander : peux-tu en avoir assez des dragons ? (rires). Oui ou non ?

Non (rires),

Peux-tu en avoir assez des puissants chateaux dans le monde ?

Non (rires),

Non ! Donc la réponse est non (rires),

 

Bien retourné, ce sont de bons arguments (rires). Quand sortira le DVD (concert enregistré au Sabaton Open Air le 20 août 2016 ndlr) ?

Nous avons eu quelques problèmes avec ça. Et nous tâchons d’en extraire certaines choses. Donc je ne peux pas te donner de date pour ça. Je ne peux rien te dire concernant ce DVD car actuellement c’est un casse tête. Plusieurs choses n’ont pas été en notre faveur.

 

Ces problèmes techniques ne sont-ils finalement pas un point faible du groupe. Je me rappelle en 2014, en première partie de Gloryhammer à Paris, vous n’aviez pu jouer Gates Of Glory jusqu’au bout à cause d’un problème technique et maintenant le DVD…Est-ce un point faible ou simplement de la mal chance.

Ça laisse place à des améliorations. Le matériel que nous apportons est un pur concentré de haute technologie. Nous avons ce gros boîtier qui diffuse toutes les orchestrations, toutes les lignes musicales en fond, tous les “bla bla bla”. Aujourd’hui nous devrions être blindés mais… je ne suis que le chanteur. Je ne suis pas le technicien dans ce groupe. Mais selon les autres, c’est censé bien marcher aujourd’hui (rires).

 

Pour terminer, comment imagines-tu le futur du groupe ?

C’est le temps qui le dira. Comme je l’ai dit précédemment, tant que nous nous amuserons, tant que nous aimerons ce qu’on fait, on continuera. Pour le moment nous allons partir en tournée avec Sabaton et Accept, ce qui sera très bon pour nous j’imagine. Ensuite, voyons voir ce qui adviendra.

Can you tell us more about the band members ? What are your others jobs ? Which sacrifices did you make to tour ? (With Sonata Arctica and Sabaton)

For myself I work with cartoons, dubbing, movies, series and stuff like that. I’m a technician and a voice actor and a director, so that is very fun. I get to do a lot of songs and arrangements in the cartoons as well and also the dialogues. It’s so important how you pronounce things, how you say things. That is my job. We also have a church musician in the band, an organ player.

 

Blackwald ?

Lynd. Blackwald is a music and engineering teacher. That’s the side story. We have to sacrifice very much when we are touring but mostly, our jobs are very understanding with what we do and that is good.

What is your main source of inspiration  ?

We’re basically a bunch of nerds and we love “heroes of might and magic”, you know that game?

No

YOU DON’T KNOW THAT GAME?? You should check it out, it’s one of the best games ever.

I only play first personal shooters like Battlefield or Counterstrike, that type of games.

Ha ok. But that is an inspiration and “Donjons and Dragons”, Skyrim, all that stuff.
What are the bands who’ve had an influence on Twilight Force’s music ?

We grew up with Rhapsody (when they were Rhapsody) and Blind Guardian, Helloween. That era between 1997/1998 and 2001 (around). Those were the bands who were the pioneers at the time, and of course we were influence by them but we also tried to create our own universe. That is why we built this whole world around Twilight Force and the characters. Have you seen the booklet with the map?
No I didn’t buy it yet, because I’m waiting an edition with both CD and DVD. Is it planned?

Not yet.

OK, so I have to buy the CD (laughs)

Yeah (laughs). If you go through the booklet it’s like : this all world, where we all come from, where we united, the characters and stuff like that.

 

Ok I ‘m looking forward to see it. Where does the idea of personifying the characters come from?

Actually, mostly from Blackwald and Lynd’s heads. They are creating the stuff. Two masterminds come together with a bunch of nerdy ideas, in a good way (laughs).

 

Do you like personifying the characters ?

Yes of course ! Everytime when I go and see a concert, I want a whole package. I want to hear. I want to see. And I want to feel. And I think, if you see Twilight Force, you get to hear (what I think) great music, you see us in the characters, we’re doing this. We all have our side stories and there is more into it. You can read about, and also you can feel, hopefully, because we’re having so much fun on stage because we love what we do and we love playing together. So, hopefully we can pass that on to the audience. When you leave a Twilight Force concert you can think this is great music, you can feel happy and it was a whole experience so, for me it’s very important to have the whole package.

 

I agree it’s a great experience. I already told you, but the show at Sabaton Open air was awesome. You gave 200% and it was incredible.

There are some big changes and evolutions between the first and the second album (length, orchestrations). How do you explain this evolution?

At first, we wanted to create a power metal album basically. An album that we could be proud of and take everything we could to the top, to the limit, push every note, every beat, everything to the limit. And then, when we’d done that we realized that people were into it, enjoying it and we were like: “…..ok, cool!”.

 

You didn’t expect a success like that ?

No, no, no. Not at all. We only did it for us, now we have an album that we can be proud of and that time I had some friends at the former record label and I was like presenting the CD to them. And I was like : “Yeah…This is us”. And they were like : “Yeah let’s do this” ! And I was like : “Ho  ?! Okay ! (laughs) Okay let’s do this. I can’t really explain… Cause everything was going so fast. Then we were about to record our second album and we just basically wanted to do something more like a movie, like a whole experience then you can use this into headphones and go through an adventure you going to feel that when you listen to Twilight Force, maybe you listen to…hmm “And There Back Again” or “Guardians Of The Seas” something like that.

Yeah ! When you listen to that, you going to feel that you are a part of this, you close your eyes and you’re there. That is our main goal with this.

And what is planned for the third album ? More like the second one or more like the first one ? Is it planned ?

Yes we’re planning it now. But only planning in our heads.

Does that plan come from you or from the label ?

No, no, no, from us! They do not interfere with anything in our music. So that is very good. Actually I don’t know where this will go (laughs). You’re going to hear Twilight Force as in us. Maybe a mix of “Tales Of Ancient Prophecies” and “Heroes”. We’re not going to do pop (laugh). We’re not going to lose ourselves, nothing like that. You’re going to hear Twilight Force on the third album as well.

 

Is it a reference to Sonata Arctica ? Because they really changed their style of music during the last 15 years.

No no no I was thinking about Metallica. I think with Sonata… Yeah it’s a change. I think for them, they matured as a band. I believe that. If you look at the first album until now, you can see that it’s like a child growing up. And there is nothing wrong with being a kid, there is nothing wrong with being a teenager, there is nothing wrong being an adult. The whole story, I think that is remarkable. I respect those guys so much and their work. I think it’s really good. They don’t deserve the criticism they get I believe because you have to look at the whole perspective.

 

Maybe some fans regret the first part of their career with a lot of power metal. Some very fast songs.  I have not criticized them, but I regret the first part of their career. For example, tonight I expect some very fast songs but I don’t think they will play it. It seems like last year they had to play the first album to make the crowd join them. Ok, let’s go back to the Twilight Force music. How was the collaboration with Fabio and Joakim ?

It was really good. I mean, both of them are really nice guys and Fabio is a professional, he is a great guy, he is a great singer. That went really good with him, doing some guest vocals. Joakim, we are old friends. We are from the same town, we grew up together. It’s like incest in Sabaton and Twilight Force. I sing with them, they sing with us. Blackwald started as keyboard player in Sabaton. In small cities this is what happens

 

Two years ago I got to know Twilight Force with “Gates Of Glory” featuring Joakim. I think they really helped you for your “success”.

Yeah yeah of course. It has helped us a lot. If they didn’t believe in us, they wouldn’t have done anything for us. But apparently they do, and now we are going to tour together.

 

Talking about featuring : have you some artists in mind who you want to collaborate with in the futur ?

It would be a dream to have Hansi Kürsch on an album. And also Michael Kiske. For me, that is one of my biggest inspirations. Let’s see what happens. Maybe we will collaborate with some. Or we won’t (laughs).

 

According to you, today what are the strengths of the band ? And what are the limits of the band? First, the strengths :

The strength of the band is… First of all, the most important thing is that we are really good friends. It’s very important that we know each other. It’s like if someone snaps ok? It’s because of this. That is the biggest strength with each other I believe. And also we’re doing this together and we’re having fun doing it. That is also the most important thing.

The weakness… I don’t think we have weakness (laughs). I mean, I don’t mean that in a douchy way. I’m not saying that Twilight Force is the best band in the world. No I’m not doing that. I don’t believe we got a weakness because we’re doing this, we’re having fun and as long we having fun we’re going to keep doing this. And I can’t think of anything.

 

I really think your voice, your talent is one of the biggest strengths of Twilight Force. You are so talented. When someone is listenning to your songs, he must be thinking ; “what a voice”

Ho thank you (laughs).

 

I have listened to both albums so many times and I wonder : aren’t you afraid to be limited by the lyrics in the future ? They are many words we hear often (kingdom, might, dragon, twilight, mountains).

Let me pass that right back to you and ask you : can you have enough dragons ?

(Laughs)

Yes or no ?

No,

No ! Is there enough of mighty castles in the world?

No.

No ! So the answer is no! (laughs)

 

That’s a good point of view (laughs). When will the DVD be released ?

We have been experiencing some troubles with that. And we’re trying to sort things out with it. So I can’t give you a date for it right now. Actually I can’t give you anything on that right now, because right now it’s like a headache, something that didn’t go our way at that side.

 

Is it a weakness of the band ? The technical problems?  I remember, before the Gloryhammer show in Paris (Chris laughs) you didn’t play Gates Of Glory until the end, now there is the problem with the DVD. Is it a limitation of the band? Or just bad luck?

There is room for improvement. Our rig we’re going with is so god damn high tech, nowadays. We have this big case which fits the whole back lines every in-ear monitor, every bla bla bla. Now we should be bullet proof but I’m just the singer (laughs). I’m not the technical guy in this band. But according to some other guys it’s supposed to be really good now (laughs).

 

How do you imagine the future of the band ?

I think time will tell. As I said before, as long we’re having fun, as long as we enjoy what we do, we’re are going to keep doing this and we’re going on tour with Sabaton and Accept which I believe is very good for us. And then let’s see what happens.
